Sometimes I Think Too Much

The Farm by Alexis Rockman

“The Farm” by Alexis Rockman [via Green LA Girl]

I know that organic living, eco-friendliness, and fair trade are not mutually exclusive concepts. Yet something that is purportedly organic isn’t necessarily fair trade. Similarly, people who invest in organic lifestyles for health reasons don’t necessarily care about sustainable farming practices. This is something I have problems grasping, which is why it boggles my mind to find the organic tofu sandwich I’ve just purchased hermetically sealed in several layers of plastic wrap.

Chekhov's Eco Tip Bring an empty lunchbox to work and use it for takeout when you get lunch at the deli. Bye bye disposable plastic container! Rinse, repeat, and congratulate yourself on keeping unnecessary plastic packaging out of the landfill.

Which is why I always recommend the reusable lunch pack that vegan lunch bos uses. I got it for my sis, and she LOVES it! :)

Those lunchboxes look great! I saw a girl on the bus the other day with a Curious George lunchbox and I coveted. Oh, how I did.

I haven’t had time in the past 2 weeks to go grocery shopping, see my roommates for more than 10 minutes or cook dinner, much less pack a lunch. It’s a depressing state of affairs. I need an intervention.

Hi Jasmin, Siva introduced myself to you as we are trying to send a team to New York come May for the 14th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-14). I read your site with great interest. I think it has lots of information. Thanks for sharing.

Perhaps we can meet you up when the delegation team is there and have an interaction session to learn more from you in person!

Have dropped you a comment instead because I failed to be able to lcoate your email directly on your website. Really look forward to hear from you!

    Cheerios!

[...] I’ve decided to make “Chekhov’s Eco Tip” a semi-regular feature, because conscientious consumption only needs to happen just one small change at a time. (You can see it a tip in action here.) If you have a spectacular tip (or extra catnip) you’d like to share, email chekhov-at-worstedwitch.com. Disclaimer: Management will not be held responsible if your email gets returned shredded, moistened, and reeking of tuna breath. [...]

[...] Chickies, I have FAILED you. Just now, while getting lunch at my local natural foods store (with my own tupperware, natch), I saw Ecover’s Floor Soap and decided a little too impulsively to add it to my tab. Then, returning to my desk, I examined the label a little closer and discovered that the product is made in Belgium. In an “ecological factory” with grass roofing, wood beams from sustainably managed forests, and bricks from coal-mine waste, but a Belgian factory nonetheless, which means this floor soap traveled thousands of miles to reach my grubby little hands, spewing pollutants in its wake.
