Coming Soon: Greensleeves

Greensleeves
I was going to wait on announcing this, but I’m totally doing the PEE-PEE DANCE and I can’t contain my excitement any longer. As an environmentalist, fair-trade advocate, and knitter, I’ve been interested in exploring the less-traveled realm where knitting and sustainability intersect. I hope you’ll join me as I explore sustainable fibers such as organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, and even soysilk, and perhaps contribute to the online compendium of resources I plan to assemble.

Please give a holler my way if you have any thoughts on sustainable knitting, crocheting, spinning, dyeing (I’m looking at you, Felicia!), and the needle arts. I hope to also run companion posts that gather the ideas/rants/musings of crafters who are also seeking to create sustainably. (I won’t judge your stash if you won’t judge mine.) A “tink1 tank,” if you will.

1 “Tink” is “knit” backwards, and refers to the motion of slowly undoing your stitches one at a time. I know, I’m an incorrigibly bad punster. Another sign I’m marked for eternal damnation.

Right on. I look forward to your thoughts, and once I see where you’re headed, maybe I can contribute. Or at least encourage.

I can’t wait to discover this new realm. And BTW, I love your blog!

Have you tried the Banana Silk yarns yet? There is also another new yarn that comes from some sort of seaweed fiber. It looks absolutely gorgeous but I have yet to find anyone who carries it. I will hunt through my notes and see if I can find the name for you.

I found it! The seaweed fiber is SeaCell and HandMaiden has a new yarn coming out using it. Knitty.com did a review of the yarn here -> http://knitty.com/blog/2006/01/knitty-yarn-preview-first.html

I knit a hat last year using SWTC Karaoke - enjoyed it but found it a bit rough against the skin (50% soysilk/50% wool). Have you looked at kpixie.com? They sell hemp and vegan yarns.

Ooooh! Somehow I missed this post until now. I’ve been looking forward to it. I’ll add my thoughts soon.

I do not knit but crochet adn currently and making wool blankets out of felted wook seaters from the thrift. I scored a few hand knit weaters with nice wool yarn I plan to unravel and use for crochet projrcts. And if you hav enot discovered http://www.crispina.com you gotta check out all the wonderful textiels she makes from recycled denim, cordurory, wool.

Hey, don’t forget us weavers. We need strong fibers that can take a lot of tension for warp. A while back (before I sold my soul to blogging) I was looking for sustainably grown fibers on the web, considering the niche for organic handwoven scarves at the farmers market. I’ll be interested in reading about what you find, even if I never have time for weaving again!
