Organic Window Boxes

Most of the windowsill gardening kits I’ve found have either been non-organic (boo, hiss) or packaged in ugly, cheap-looking terracotta planters. I’ve even found a few that included a wooden crate of questionable sustainability.

These kits from our neighbors to the north, however, appear far more appealing. Each kit includes a package of organically cultivated seeds, organic soilless growing mix, expanded clay pellets, and growing instructions. (No peat!)

You get a choice of nine varieties, including edible pansies, a Scarborough Fair mix (i.e., parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme), dwarf sunflowers, cat grass, an herbal tea garden, lavender, and an Italian herb mix. Perfect for the aspiring urban gardener who isn’t quite prepared to haul organic potting soil home just yet. Or at least make her husband haul it home for her while grudgingly enduring his tirade against Whole Foods and swearing on the heads of her unborn children and every homeless, motherless one-eyed kitten she’ll never make him go in there again. Hey, Whole Foods carries TerraCycle, and NYC has a dearth of stores stocking what I need within reasonable distance. Just sayin’. (CDN$14.99-$19.99, Grassroots Environmental Products)
