Ah magazines!! They are a bother in my house, too. I try to justify them as "research aids". I am a big fan of Natural Home as well.

I have a packrat problem with magazines too - it's genetic, my mother has magazines dating back to the 80s! I thought that I'd NEVER give up my subscriptions to Handwoven and Cooking Light. Then I picked up some of my old copies I'd saved, and guess what? It was like they were new to me. So at least I'm not adding to the stash any more, and I actually recycled a few of my Cooking Lights the other day WITHOUT EVEN FLIPPING THROUGH THEM. Progress, my imaginary therapist would say.

I can't tell you how many people have asked us to publish a catalog. We keep refusing, though. Hello? An eco-friendly store cutting down trees so that we can sell our goods? Never! Plus, you look at catalogs for a week or two and they take up room! They drive me crazy!

We're going through the same purge you are right now, only it's CDs, DVDs, and books. I'm trying to sell a bunch on Amazon to fund my education.

Next on our list is our storage unit. We live in a 600 sq mobile home so much of our stuff won't fit in our home. While I won't get rid of the big stuff (such as the funiture that was my grand/parents) I am going to be Freecycling a whole bunch.

After storage, it's the knick-knacks friends have gotten us over the years as gifts. Things we've never really wanted but didn't know what to do with. We're freecycling those (or, if anyone has a thing for skulls, let me know. I'll gladly send them along).

The hardest has been for Wolf to part with his comic books. He wants to sell them but the protocals for selling them are really intricate.

oh, i do love your blog. found you thru keri smith and glad i did. i hear you about magazines and pack ratting. i have four years of dwell magazine that i can't bear to throw out. plus a couple of years of organic style, ms living and real simple (such an oxymoron). add in many random others and three home moves. i won't take them with me again! i think i've decided that i will one favorite from each month and set it out on the coffee table this year. each time i reread it is as if i've never read it before! the fun is that i've already dogeared the good pages... thanks for the humor and green intentions!

I am in the process of doing this too. This is a hard task for me simply because magazines are fun. I have a big bag of magazines that get dropped off at the doctor's office at each appointment. I managed at the end of the year to go from five magazine subscriptions to one. Now if I am really jonesing for a magazine I take a trip to Borders and have a latte while checking out the magazine section or I check it out on-line. I love Real Simple too yet my sister-in-law gets it so I check it out when I am over at her house. Like you, we simply don't have the space...

Hi,
I love your blog. I've sent your info to a number of people because I think it's super important. I've made some excellent changes because of you. Thank you. I'm also afraid when I go to sleep at night because of what you blog about...Anyway, if you'd like to pass those forward and truly recycle, I'd take them off your hands. I never subscibed because I moved 3 years ago and was determined not to get junk mail at the new place. So far, pretty good. However, I love that mag. So, really...I'd take them off your hands. Guilt free recycling. I would read them and then recycle them appropriately. Just let me know!

I love Real Simple (as you know since I made you an addict). But it's not getting renewed. Why you ask? I don't get to it and it's my ONLY mag. Also, it justifies my turning down 2 very cute 11-13 year olds who came around asking me to renew or order new mags to help their school. I felt like such an ASS at the time (yes I was capitalized) but all this paper is killing me with it's clutter!

check the Real Simple website first before you add more paper to your collection. They have finally made their archives available to everyone.

Oh, Real Simple. It's almost a disease. We haven't renewed our subscription for awhile, but they still keep coming. I love them, but they're so thick and heavy and paperful...
