How Many Reindeer?

You laugh now, but someday a reindeer will fly. Photo by Johnny Johnson/Getty Images

I dig this guy’s letter to the editors of the Northwest Herald so much I’m quoting it in full:

To the Editor:

How many reindeer do you have to throw off a roof before a true believer admits reindeer can’t fly? It doesn’t matter how many you throw off the roof. How much evidence do you need before a global warming skeptic admits it’s real and we’re causing it? Same answer.

Thousands of climate scientists in Paris are sure it’s real and we’re causing it, but a guy in Algonquin knows the truth. He says it’s just a “theory.” Same thing people who want intelligent design taught in schools say about evolution.

It’s the radio talk show “truth” spouted by Rush Limbaugh and others that your average Joe skeptic can quote. Limbaugh knows more than all the climate scientists, too. The few skeptical scientists they quote are the same ones we’ve heard from for two decades, most of whom receive funding from Exxon Mobil or other oil companies.

We should trust oil companies who have billions to lose if we act and the skeptics they fund. I’m sure they’ve got our best interest at heart. So if you’re still a skeptic, start or keep listening to Limbaugh everyday. Or get together with the guy in Algonquin.

I think it’s time we stopped talking about climate change and instead talk what’s causing it - pollution. Climate change has not been ‘prove’, at least as far as skeptics are concerned. Pollution, on the other hand, pollution is easy to prove. Look at the air over any large city around the world, look at rivers near coal mines that no longer support fish life, rocket fuel in breast milk - the list is endless.

Let’s stop wasting time and energy trying to convince skeptics. Change the argument instead. The end result will be the same.

That ‘prove’ should be ‘proven’. Sorry about that.
