I was there live for this event. It was interesting, but I felt like John Mackey was really being ambushed by the audience in a very disrespectful manner. I think if the audience hadn’t been so openly hostile (I haven’t watched the video, so I’m not sure if it came across) then he might have spoken his mind a little bit more openly, actually engaging Pollan in a toothy debate, rather than rolling over and taking the claws out of what he was saying. I must say I was mainly disappointed that at such a highly respected hippie enclave as UC Berkeley both students and community attendees could in engage in things like whistling, hissing, downright booing, and, at times, tossing down snide comments from the cheap seats. I think it portrayed Berkeley and the Bay Area in general as extraordinarily intolerant. I think even if you disagree with someone, you need to at least listen respectfully.
I must say I never knew anything about the ethos of Whole Foods before and I’m much MUCH more willing to consider shopping with them in the future.
