Most commercial bleach contains chlorine, a highly corrosive and hazardous air pollutant, capable of damaging skin, eyes, and other membranes. Chlorine bleach can also cause cancer-causing chemicals to form in the waste water stream. So I nearly blacked out with rage when my sister … my ASTHMATIC sister, I might add … told me that her roommate uses chlorine bleach to clean her coffee mugs. Please, don’t be a dunderhead—baking soda, which is just as effective in getting out stains, is a much more eco- and health-friendly alternative. More green cleaning tips here.

So I don’t even use bleach when i change the litter in my cats’ boxes. I don’t use it on almost anything anymore because my cats and dogs walk, play and lay on EVERYTHING! Do I want them to be eating bleach residue? Not so much…
