that’s a cool link. when i started knitting, i noticed two things. one, handmade items take a long time to produce. two, handmade items are often very high quality. which fits in the philosophy of living simply, but also living well.

industrialization has rendered old school crafts almost useless, since pretty much everything can be factory-made. and as a consequence, certain skills, like leather-tanning in the article, are almost lost. It’s a little sad, but I’m heartened by the surgence of D.I.Y. movement and people who want to learn lost traditions of making your own stuff, whether it be a chair, sauerkraut, or sweater. There was a time when such skills weren’t dismissively called hobbies, but real skills that were useful to the community.

I’m making it my goal in life to become a jill-of-all-trades. I figure it’s never a bad idea to learn something new.
