The Earth Day Giving Tree

Graphic by Energy Star
Prepare for a deluge of Earth Day tie-ins as the clock counts down to April 22. Energy Star’s Earth Day Giving Tree is a tad less gimmicky than most—a tad. (A slight parenthetical tangent: Did anyone else find Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree rather depressing? But then again, I have no emotional skin when it comes to self-sacrificing anthropomorphic plant life. Or lost pets, for that matter, which is why I can never watch Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey ever, ever again. The bastards.)
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Instead of giving someone you love a physical gift, you can pledge to take on one of 10 eco-friendly measures, such as “Change a light,” “Give your car a break,” and, of course, “Choose Energy Star for your home.” Each dedication adds a leaf to a virtual tree. Giving someone the gift of a healthier planet? Now that’s amore. (So is scooping up someone’s poop on a daily basis, but you know, potayto, potahto.)

I agree completely with you when it comes to being unable to handle self-sacrificing anthropomorphic plant life and lost pets, so let me warn you. Never, EVER, EVER read “The Tenth Good Thing About Barney.” You will die. Just straight-up die. Do not make the same mistake I did - I wish I had been warned about this when I was 8.
