Mark Ryden Speaks for the Trees

“General Sherman” by Mark Ryden
One of my favorite artists, Mark Ryden, whose toenail clippings I’m not even worthy of worshiping, will have a limited-edition lithographic poster for sale on April 25 to commemorate Earth Day. At $500 per print, you’ll need to have some serious change floating around in the cracks of your sofa, but, for what it’s worth to your pocketbook, 100 percent of the proceeds of this edition will be donated to the Sierra Club for the protection of the Sequoias in the Giant Sequoia National Monument. Ryden’s Web site notes: “The Bush administration proposes radical plans to allow destructive commercial logging with in the National Monument.”
The posters are printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper, while the inks “uphold the most rigorous standards for the least environmental impact.”
Currently on view at the Michael Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles (through April 28), the original painting, “General Sherman,” is Ryden’s ode to the world’s largest tree.
