Digging Spring

I only have window sills—good for a mini herb garden and one perching cat, but not much else, so let me live vicariously through you lucky backyard and porch types. What are you planting (or planning to plant) this growing season?
P.S.: Check out Summer’s home-grown strawberry!

My daughter picked her first cherry tomato of the season (Sweet 110s) last night. Last year we were overrun with them!
This year’s garden consists of four tomato varieties (three big and the aforementioned cherries), Armenian cukes, basil, thyme, mint & oregano, chard, pole beans, strawberries, marigolds and sunflowers.
Thanks for your wonderful blog!

I am still harvesting the winter greens- arugala, spinach, and kale. When I am all through with the summer garden I will have planted beets, cucumber (armenian as well), tomatos, beans, radishes, carrots and whatever else will fit into my little garden. I can’t wait, there is nothing that beats summer tomatoes!

just moved to a cohousing community so had to rearrange garden plans a bit, but not too bad. so far mostly growing cold weather veggies (cabbage, broccoli, spinach) in hopes they’ll turn into something, bok choy, okra, soybean, tomatoes (3-4 different kinds), peppers (2 different kinds), lots of stinky herbs — thyme, catnip, pinapple geranium, pineapple sage, chocolate mint, garlic chives, and lettuce. there might be more that i’ve forgotten.
you can view pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ejchang/sets/72157594492913844/.
right now we’re trying to get a community garden (with plots and all) going. it’s going to be a bit hard b/c there’s almost no soil and water source is not set up, but it’s got plenty of sun.
not sure what kind of housing you have but is there any way you could have a green roof (i.e. growing stuff in containers or raised beds on the roof) or join a community garden nearby (if they have any plots available)? alternatively you could find out which veggies do very well in pots (i hear chinese 5-color pepper is a good one).

So far, cucumbers, mini tomatoes, basil, Japanese eggplant, and taka no tsume (um, chili peppers?). Oh, and good ol’ American-style punkins, but I doubt they will actually work on a VERANDA. When I go home, oh baby, I’m gonna just have my entire yard bursting with garden!

So far…nothing’s been planted and it’s driving me bonkers! We haven’t hit our average last frost date yet, but I’ve usually found ways around that (hot caps made from old plastic soda/milk/vinegar bottles work great!). No, the hold up is the installation of raised beds in a new location of my yard, and getting help to put the beds in place. Planned for planting this year once the beds are in: asparagus, blueberries (these first two will be in dedicated beds, of course, since they are perennials), about 3 tomato plants, 4 assorted peppers (yellow and orange this year, I think), pole beans, cucumbers (the last 2 years have been rotten for cukes, but I’ll try again), swiss chard, and beets. If there’s enough space I’ll add some zucchini or other summer squash.
Love the blog. I stumbled upon while blog surfing one day, and am very glad to have found it!

I am so in love with my mystery citrus and watching it grow. I cannot wait for my tomatoes and Japanese eggplant with some of my basil. I have never tried to grow a garden in pots before, but we just spent almost a year redeveloping our back deck in Savannah so want to make the most of it. Plus, I am a tomato snob and haven’t been able to find REALLY GOOD TOMATOES in ages.

Mostly everything is still growing indoors these days… tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, kale, etc.
But the peas are poking up, and I’m about to plant onions in a couple of days. Also? Just noticed the first few stalks of asparagus. Sweet!

Lots growing in my garden here in D.C. My favorite things as of late are arugula and strawberries.
