I’m majorly bummed: We just found out that the city has taken back our community garden, padlocking it so no one can get it. Now we have nowhere to take our food waste to be composted, which is a damn shame when I’ve been so proud of the fact that at least 95 percent of our waste is either composted or recycled. (Which saves a ton of money on garbage bags, by the way, especially when they’re hoity Seventh Generation recycled-plastic liners.) Jersey City needs more gardens, not less, amid the soulless sprawl of concrete parking lots. In fact, I’m so incensed I’m thisclose to chaining myself to the garden’s gate and belting out Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” at the top of my lungs, which, trust me, won’t be doing any favors for anyone within earshot. Let’s pray, Dear Reader, that it doesn’t come to that.

Why did they padlock it? What are they going to do to the land? This is craziness!

That really stinks. My family has through composting dropped from a 32 gallon garbage can per week to not filling a 20 gallon can per week. Unfortunately our the garbage company doesn’t allow for micro cans. It frustrates me because I believe that if other people see you do something they will be curious and maybe want to try too. Sorry, I guess this is just my own rant.

What? How can they do that? Are they going to sell the land? I have huge sympathy for how you feel - right now there are a lot of scary new plans the British govt. are currently hatching up to enable developers to build on any scrap of land they want, and it’s vile. Fingers crossed it wont come to that for you and your community garden can be saved. Oh I’m Pat by the way…hi! :)

[...] Yesterday, as I was racing off to my community garden to get the new key—yes, we got it back!—I whizzed by a woman sitting on the steps of her building, smoking. Usually I just scrunch up my face and carry on, but I did a double-take when I saw the baby in the stroller next to her. Now, I try not to be a know-it-all wiseass in public, but should I have said something, especially with all that we know about secondhand smoking now? [...]
